Renewable Energy and UK targets

Renewable Energy

Clean, renewable forms of energy, such as wind power, are essential if we are to tackle climate change. It has been estimated that 97% of CO2 emitted by western industrialised countries comes from burning coal, oil and gas for energy.  Wind power does not produce dangerous waste, nor does it contribute to global warming. It is the most proven and reliable form of renewable electricity generation.

Wind energy is abundant, reliable, safe and free. The UK is the windiest country in Europe and the resource is much greater during the colder months of the year, when energy demand is at its highest. Unlike fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, wind energy will never run out.  Harnessing onshore wind provides energy security and bridges the widely forecast energy gap.

Scottish and UK Renewables targetssmall turbine 3.bmp

In order to tackle climate change the EU has set the UK targets that 15% of all our energy, including transportation, should come from renewable sources by 2020.

  • In order to meet this, around 30-40% of our electricity would have to come from renewables, as transportation fuel and heat are difficult to obtain from renewable sources
  • Scotland has further expanded on this by setting ambitious targets of at least 50% of Scottish electricity coming from renewables by 2020
  • Current UK renewable electricity generation is only 5%
  • Current Scottish renewable electricity generation is only 15%

No other county in the UK has benefitted more from the Carbon based energies of oil and gas yet despite this Aberdeenshire's current renewable electricity generation is only 3%.
